How To Help Animals In Your Community

Most people enjoy pets, whether their own or somebody else’s. In most communities, there are many abandoned and homeless cats and dogs. Even if you can’t adopt a pet and provide a forever home, there are ways you can help — FuzzyFreak.net lists some ideas below.
Donate
Most animal shelters or rescue groups operate on extremely limited budgets, so donating money or needed items can make a big difference.
- Best Friends, an organization affiliated with numerous animal care groups, offers different ways you can donate and will connect you with places most in need.
- Most animal shelters will be happy to get old newspapers, towels, and bedding, as well as pet food, animal toys, and cat litter. Contact them first to find out what they need.
- Start a fund-raising project, like a dog wash-–enlist volunteers, and let people know the funds will go to a local rescue group.
- Whenever donating items, read reviews to ensure you’re donating superior pet products.
Volunteer
Volunteering your time at a rescue organization is a great way to help.
- Volunteer to help exercise or walk dogs at the local animal shelter. If you live in an area assigned with a high walk score, chances are you have activities and parks nearby.
- Help with animal grooming—a clean, well-trimmed pet is more likely to be adopted.
- Some organizations use volunteers to help socialize or train animals.
Foster a pet
If you can’t provide a lifetime home, fostering is a good option. You could foster a pet for a weekend, a week, or a few months.
- Many shelters need foster homes for pets too young to be adopted or those that need extra care.
- Fostering a pet is a way to help without a long-term commitment. Often you can select the length of time you will host a foster animal.
- Sometimes owners need temporary homes for pets and will reclaim their animals once a crisis has passed.
Start your own non-profit organization
You may want to start your own non-profit animal rescue. If you have the time, energy, and resources, this is a wonderful idea.
- First, assess the need and the currently existing animal rescue organizations in your community. Document and keep records of what you find.
- Determine where you’ll house the animals waiting for homes, and research local regulations.
- File articles of incorporation and create bylaws for your organization.
- Get a tax ID number and file for nonprofit status.
There are many ways you can help the animals in your community. Whether you fundraise, volunteer, donate items or money, or start your own non-profit animal rescue, you’ll be making a difference for abandoned and homeless pets in your area. Your help will be appreciated by both humans and furry creatures in the neighborhood.
